What is a Service Upgrade?
The phrases “electrical panel upgrade” and “electrical service upgrade are often used interchangeably. That’s because they are sometimes performed together. They are, however, two separate things.
An electrical service upgrade refers to upgrading the level of electrical service coming into your house “from the pole.” For instance, an older home may only be receiving 60, or 100 amps. A service upgrade can bring this up to as high as 200 amps, but when you upgrade your service, you’ll often need to upgrade your panel as well which will also add additional breaker space for future circuits.
You may need to replace the electrical panel even if you aren’t upgrading your service. For instance, if your panel is old it may be worn out and inefficient. In some cases, it may need to be replaced for safety issues.
