The best way to explain is through a water example. If you had 50 psi of water pressure and a 1 inch pipe giving you 10 gallons of water a minute, that would be a good comparison.  

Volts is basically the pressure that pushes the electrons through the wire and amps is how much is being used. So 50 psi of water giving 10 gallons would be like 120 volts giving you 10 amps. That is why higher voltages are used for bigger amp draws.
